Grocery and Logistics for a Full House

Practical groundwork for feeding and running a full group house, from the first grocery run onward.

Renting a house instead of hotel rooms puts your group in charge of feeding itself, which is a bigger job than it sounds like from the couch at home. A little planning before the first grocery run saves real friction once everyone actually arrives.

Know your real headcount first

The same number that decides bedroom count also decides how many people you're actually shopping for. Get a firm headcount from the group before anyone builds a grocery list, not a rough guess. Our bedroom guide is built around the same principle: plan around the real number, not the number you assumed at the start.

Check what's already there before you shop

A rental kitchen is not always stocked the way a home kitchen is. Basic items like coffee, spices, paper towels and dish soap may or may not already be in the house. Before anyone makes a grocery run, have someone actually open the cabinets and see what's there, rather than assuming and buying doubles of everything.

One big shop beats several small ones

For a full house, one coordinated grocery trip on arrival day tends to work better than everyone grabbing what they personally want throughout the week. A single list, built from what the group actually plans to eat, avoids the situation where the fridge fills up with everyone's individual breakfast preferences and nothing anyone can actually cook a real meal with.

Plan for the meals you'll actually cook together

Not every meal needs to be a group production, but a couple of shared meals tend to be the ones people remember. Decide ahead of time which nights the group is cooking together and which nights everyone is on their own. That one decision, made before you arrive, heads off the nightly argument about who is cooking for whom.

Delivery is a real option, not a backup plan

Grocery and meal delivery services operate across Miami and Fort Lauderdale the same way they do in most cities, and for a group that does not want to spend a morning at a store, delivery to the house is a legitimate first choice rather than something to fall back on only if the store trip falls through.

Assign the jobs nobody volunteers for

Someone needs to take the trash out. Someone needs to notice the dish situation before it becomes a problem. A family reunion spanning several generations often has the widest range of ages to divide these jobs across, and a full house runs more smoothly when at least these two jobs are actually assigned to a person instead of left to whoever notices first, which in practice is often nobody.

Ask before you assume the kitchen is ready for a big group

Kitchen equipment is not confirmed the same way bedroom counts are on our villa pages. Before you plan a meal that depends on a specific pan, appliance or amount of counter space, it is worth asking. Our FAQ explains what is and is not confirmed about each house on this site.

Write the plan down somewhere everyone can see it

None of this needs a formal spreadsheet, but it helps to put the basics somewhere the whole group can check: who is shopping and when, which nights are group dinners, who is on trash duty. A shared note or a photo of a whiteboard in the kitchen works fine. The point is not the format. The point is that the plan lives somewhere other than one person's memory, so it survives even if that person is the first one out the door to the beach.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Should we do one big grocery shop or several smaller ones?

One coordinated shop on arrival day, built from a list the group actually agrees on, tends to work better than everyone buying separately throughout the stay. It's easier to cook a real meal from a planned list than from a fridge full of individual preferences.

Does a rental house usually have basic kitchen equipment?

That varies by property and is not confirmed the same way a bedroom count is. If a meal depends on a specific pan or appliance, ask before you arrive rather than assuming it will be there.

Who should be in charge of groceries for the group?

Either one person takes it on for the whole stay, or the group rotates by day. Either works, as long as it is decided before you arrive rather than sorted out in the store.
